Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the Memorial Building and Palmer School once represented the civic center of Independence. Today, that no longer holds true. Though structurally sound, significant renovations are needed to bring the facilities into compliance with current building codes, safety guidelines, accommodations for the disabled, and evolving community needs.
Working with the Independence School District, the City has established a steering committee to raise support for the Memorial Building and Palmer School restoration effort. Approximately two-thirds of the estimated $6 million needed to fund the project has already been raised ($2 million from State economic development funds and $1.75 million from a half-cent sales tax increase approved by city voters). The remaining funds are being raised by the Truman Memorial Building- Palmer School Restoration Campaign.
The contributions to this campaign will make these two buildings the civic and educational centers of the community they once were. Upon completion, the two renovated facilities will:
· Preserve two historic landmarks for future generations to enjoy
· Create a permanent memorial to local war veterans
· Provide a multi-purpose center for youth & family programs
· Showcase performing and cultural arts
· Honor ties to the Truman legacy
· House a senior adult nutrition and recreation center.
